Prince of Persia is a historic franchise. Through the years, we have seen many good titles. From the distant 1989 and the iconic first game, to the Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, the metroidvania title that came out in 2024. However, the games that truly made the franchise famous were the Sands of Time trilogy.
The Prince of Persia: The Sand of Time is the first game, followed by Warrior Within and The Two Thrones. All three games had a great epic story, modern for their time mechanisms, fantastic platforming, and an enjoyable action-fighting system. In fact, these games were the basis for another huge Ubisoft franchise that was introduced in the following years, Assassin’s Creed.
When the Remake of The Sands of Time was announced in 2020, the anticipation in the gaming world was more than obvious. One of the most beloved franchises was coming back, and the gamers were excited to return to this dark fairytale story. However, the first trailer’s release prompted many of us to lower our expectations. The game wasn’t what it should have been, with the most debatable thing of the remake being the artistic design.
After the backlash that followed the first trailer, Ubisoft had to rearrange the whole project. The developers were supposed to know what to do, to deliver the best possible outcome to please the fans. The team also released a new teaser trailer showing that the remake was still alive, expected in 2026. Bun deep inside, we all knew that something was wrong after all the delays.
And finally, we received the sad news from the Prince of Persia team that the project had been officially canceled. An announcement that really wasn’t a surprise. All I have to say is that it’s a real pity for such a big developer like Ubisoft to be unable to make a remake of one of its most iconic titles. And I feel sorry because I wanted to relive the whole trilogy with new graphics, modern controls, and advanced technologies like 3d audio and haptics. Thank you, Ubisoft, for disappointing us once again. At least, we still have the original trilogy to remember.
