In brightest day, in blackest night, I hope DC will do this right.

Hal Jordan and Jon Stewart in Lanterns series.

The Headline

DC Studios has officially pulled back the curtain on Lanterns, the reimagining of the Green Lantern Corps. Following a series of leaks, the first official trailer debuted on March 4, 2026, confirming an August premiere and giving fans their first look at the tense partnership between a grizzled Hal Jordan and a skeptical John Stewart.

The Intel

  • The Vibe: The feeling is totally different from the high-fantasy space opera of the 2011 film. Lanterns is more grounded. You can call it an Earth-based murder mystery set in the American heartland (specifically, small-town Nebraska). In fact, Showrunner Chris Mundy describes it as a “terrestrial” story that connects to the broader “Gods and Monsters” narrative of the DCU.
  • The Cast:
    • Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan: A veteran Lantern nearing retirement, described as having a dry wit and a “battered” hero energy.
    • Aaron Pierre as John Stewart: A former Marine and “artistic architect” who is the new recruit.
    • Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner: Returning from Superman (2025), Gardner is described as “abrasive” and the last person you want in an emergency.
    • Ulrich Thomsen as Sinestro: Confirmed as a former member of the Corps.
    • Kelly Macdonald as Sheriff Kerry: A local law enforcement officer who finds herself caught between the two “space cops.”
  • Trailer Highlights: The footage gives emphasis on how the two main leads interact with each other—Hal refers to John as a “substitute teacher,” while John bites back that he does a better job of protecting people. The trailer is notably light on CGI and “superhero” staff, focusing instead on detective work. However, it features a brief look at the Power Ring, a battered suit design, and Hal taking flight. It also includes a brief, humorous nod to Ch’p, the squirrel-like Lantern.

Initial thoughts

Lanterns is the third live-action series in James Gunn’s new DCU. It consists of eight episodes and is positioned to air shortly after the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow theatrical release (June 2026), serving as a bridge to the larger cosmic mysteries of the franchise.

Unfortunately, I haven’t seen the other two series, Creature Commandos and Peacemaker. The thing is that I don’t have a lot of faith in James Gunn. I’m not a fan of his work, and I don’t think that his style matches DCU’s vibe, at least the vibe I am accustomed to. However, I’m not all negative about Lanterns.

Many fans compare the atmosphere with that of True Detective, and I have to agree with that. This is the reason why I still have hopes for the series. The colours, the mood, the characters, all parameters fit very nicely along with the “superhero” heart that the show seems to have. And both Hal Jordan and John Stewart look miles better than Guy Gardner we saw in Superman. At least in my eyes.

So, what can I expect from the series? To start with, a serious story filled with mystery. Also, the two protagonists seem to have great chemistry between them and I think that it will be very interesting to see their interaction. Is it going to be true to the source material? Well, this is something we have to wait and see.

The one thing that I am skeptical about is that we didn’t see any powers. I want to see how the green lantern suit looks on them, how the powers of the ring are portrayed, and if the CGI is at an adequate level for a show named Lanterns. Overall, I am pleased with the first sample, but I will wait with skepticism before throwing my hat in the air.
