I was born in the 80’s. He-Man was one of my first watches on TV and one of the things that hit nostalgia in me. I have watched the whole show in its time and the spinoff with She-Ra afterwards. I don’t say that I am a fanboy, but I like it very much. It was magical, powerful, with strong characters and a feline that, from a scary cat, becomes a fearless tiger. What else could you possibly want?
When I first learned about the movie that was in the works, I was somewhat excited. I would like to see a Masters of the Universe movie, but I don’t know how all this setting can be transferred to the big screen. So, I was very curious to see the first trailer, just to get a glimpse of what I should expect. And unfortunately, I think that the movie will flop badly…
To begin with, I want to write about the things that I like in the production so far, and give me hope. The cast is very good and includes Idris Elba, Jared Leto, Morena Baccarin, Alison Brie, and Camila Mendes. They are all actors and actresses that I like and played to some very good movies or series. In addition, the visual effects look good enough for a movie of this calibre, and Skeletor’s costume and design are fantastic and stick to trueness. And that’s about all.
Now, let’s mention the things that I don’t like or find myself sceptical about. Nicholas Galitzine plays Prince Adam (He-Man), and I don’t know if he can deliver. In my opinion, physically is not where he should be to portray the Prince of Eternia. I mean, he is jacked, but he seems kind of small. At least this is what I get from the trailer. I would like him to be more buffed. Also, he lacks experience in big production movies. I hope he does well.
The same goes for the director as well. And I’m not talking about the buffiness but about his experience. It’s the first time he’s made a movie this big, with tons of CGI and fantasy characters. Even though he’s done Bumblebee, I think Masters of the Universe is something quite different, as Eternia is a complete fantasy setting, and the scale is bigger.
Another thing that hit bad in my eye is the costume for He-Man. Don’t get me wrong, the suit is the same as the original. But I don’t know if it’s proper for a movie. Maybe it fits nicely in an 80’s kids tv show, but not for the big screen. It looks ugly. Maybe a redesigned kind of armor whould be better.
However, the above are not as big a problem as the scenario and the story. And there, I think the movie will have a big problem. And why’s that, I hear you asking. The answer is the involvement of Earth. Unless I am wrong, I don’t remember He-Man had any connection with Earth. He didn’t live there, I mean. If I can recall correctly, he was born and raised in Eternia and never been to Earth. So, they changed the lore, and I can’t understand the reason. And in most cases, when writers add their own ideas to an already established lore, rarely does something good come out. Nevertheless, by the power of Greyskull, we can only wait and see. The movie will be released on the 5th of June 2026.
