We have known for quite some time now that a God of War series is in the works, based on the popular PlayStation franchise. The rumours and speculations about the actor who would carry the heavy burden of incarnating one of the most iconic video game characters of all time were numerous. The Internet would go crazy just at the idea of seeing Kratos wielding his axe in a live-action tv series.
Now, the waiting has finally ended as Amazon Prime made a post about the live version of the Spartan warrior, who will go against the Norse Gods. The man is Ryan Hurst, an actor best known for his role as Opie Winston in Sons of Anarchy, a show that holds a special place in the history of the most successful series ever. Additionally, Hurst was included in more famous tv shows with main roles, like Bates Motel, Outsiders, and The Walking Dead.
The interesting thing in his selection for portraying Kratos is that it is not the first time he has been involved with the GoW franchise. Hurst was the voice of Thor in the last two installments, a role that made him a Bafta nominee in the “Performer in a Supporting Role” category. A good and hopeful sign since he already knows the universe the series will take place in.
Just to mention some things about the God of War live adaptation
The series is programmed to have two seasons, and it will be based on the story of God of War (2018) and God of War: Ragnarok (2022) games. So, except for Kratos, we also expect to see Atreus and the interaction between them. Freya, Thor, Baldur, Odin, and many more well-known characters from the games are expected to be seen as well, but till now, the information about the pre-production is quite limited.
The showrunner and writer will be Ronald D. Moore, a producer best known for his sci-fi series like Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, and For All Mankind. However, he was the showrunner of Outlander, a fantasy drama that takes place mostly in Scotland in 1743. Even though God of War looks like a completely different project from his previous jobs, the truth is that his experience is undeniable, and the success of his old TV shows is already given.
If you want my opinion, I believe Ryan Hurst will deliver the role of Kratos perfectly. And it’s not about his appearance (in fact, I wanted Kratos to be a little more intimidating). His involvement with the franchise before, and the experience he has in successful TV shows with big productions, are things that you cannot bypass. And most importantly, he is a great actor. No fears there. The same goes for Moore as well. He has a lot of experience in making successful series and writing good stories. Having all the above in mind, I am more than certain that the adaptation will be truly epic. And I don’t want to think otherwise.
So to conclude, Amazon Prime Video, do your magic. The GoW franchise is one of my favourites in the video game world, and especially the last two games. I am most eager to learn more about the actors and the characters, and looking forward to seeing Ryal Hurst as Kratos chopping enemies with Leviathan in his journey through the magical places of Norse mythology.
